Louisville Card File: Colorado

cardsFree throws.

Allow me to repeat, free throws.

As in, if you make your free throws, you win the game.

Louisville was only 24/40 at the line for the game. 60%. Yes, mediocre.

Ah, but let’s look further. That’s what we do here.

At the media timeout with 10:19 to play, the Cards were up a deuce, 46-44. At that juncture, they were 13/27 at the charity stripe. That’s a seriously underwhelming 48%.

Previously undefeated Colorado never led again. Because, from that point on, U of L canned 11 of 13 at the charity stripe. Ball game.

Rebounds.

Let me reiterate, rebounds.

As in, if you hold your own on the boards against a significantly taller club, your chances of going home a winner are increased.

The Cards won the battle of the glass, 52-47. Including 21 snatched off the offensive backboard.

The Cards had lots of second chances. Many of which they converted, contributing significantly to the W.

Defense.

Yes, you understand what I’m doing here, so I shall repeat. Defense.

Like, you know, if you hold the other team’s scorer without points, it increases your chances of winning the game.

Lexy Kresl, the Buffs second leading scorer on the year, ate Louisville up before intermission. She’d tallied 15 of Colorado’s 29 points at the break.

With 2:35 to play, her team down 55-62, Kreisl sank two FTs. They were her first points of the second half. They were her last two points of the second half.

The Cardinals were 1/10 from beyond the arc.

U of L misses Antonita Slaughter.

Shoni Schimmel, shamefully overweight again this season, can still ball. She scored 30, hitting 8/17 from the field, and 13/16 at the line.

She snared 7 boards.

Bria Smith, who spent some 2d half time in the locker room after suffering a mouth injury, was the other Cardinal in double figures with 13.

Fifty six fouls were called, 32 on the visitors. I’m sure they feel they were hosed by the refs.

Well, in a way they were. But, so were the Cardinals.

Jesse Dickerson, Kevin Dillard and Kathy Ridilla, stated as simply as possible, called the worst game in memory. They missed call after call after call after call . . . both ways.

And it wasn’t just the difficult whistles, the block/ charge, etc. They missed walks and double dribbles; they missed the easy and obvious.

They were truly awful.

But the Cards won 69-62, so we’ll forgive and forget and wish those zebras — and the Buffaloes too — a Happy Holiday season.

  1. Lowest of all lows. Commenting on shoni’s weight after she pours in 30! Why not comment on cal’s need for a manzier, Mr. Blue?
