Louisville Card File: Rutgers

dunikcardLet me start out by repeating myself.

I know, as if, that isn’t my normal M O.

Any conference W on the road is a good one. No matter how abysmal the foe may be. Period.

Don’t believe me? Today’s referrals: UConn, again. Duke, who learned how strange things most always seem to happen when visiting South Bend. And, Oklahoma State, who came up short in Manhattan. Kansas, that is.

Yeah, I know the Bearcats won in Memphis. I would offer that it’s that old exception, proving the rule thing.

The Cards win at RAC was U.G.L.Y.

So what? A win is a win is a . . . Continue reading Louisville Card File: Rutgers

dunikcardLest you are deluded that a W on the road against a not-ready-for-prime-time league foe, let alone one by 25 points, is no big deal, find a UConn Huskie to chat up.

One of the Cards significant rivals for the AAC crown, Shabazz Napier et al fell at 9-5 Houston in a tilt contested in an eerily empty arena, but for a few family members and close personal friends.

Conference wins on the road are always big. Even against the over-matched Central Florida Brandon Benders.

The beleaguered Cardinals came up huge on New Year’s Eve, 90-65.

* * * * *

Despite all the hand-wringing in the wake of the L in Rupp, despite the despondency at the banishment of Chane Behanan and probability of Kevin Ware being a no-show for the rest of the year, this Cardinal squad, if nowhere near as potent as last year’s champs, is not without talent. Deep in the heart of Louisiana zydeco country, there’s a place called Cafe des Amis. it’s in Breaux Bridge, which is just a few Michael Doucet et Beausoleil-inspired two-step pas des deuxs down the I-10 from Lafayette.

They love their Fais Do Do so much in cajun country, they even party down at that joint on Saturday mornings. True. Starting at, like, 8:30. In the a.m..

The Ragin’ Cajuns brought more than a little of that spirit with them yesterday to the Yum!, where fans who braved the cold and icy streets were treated to the offensingest game, well, ever. At least at the yummy yum Yum!.

The Cards hit triple digits on a Montrezl dunk with 7:38 left on the clock. But the B-ball party started a lot earlier.

The Rick called a timeout with the score knotted at 32 with 7:32 left in the opening stanza. U of L had lead by 11 just moments before. Not sure exactly what advice he gave the Cards, but it sure coulda been, “Allons dansez.” Which, if my Cajun French is even close to correct, means “Let’s all dance.”

So, after the media timeout, which came just a few ticks of the clock later, here’s what the Cards did, possession by possession. A Terry Rozier threeball. A Chris Jones drive and layup. A Mango drive and layup. A Silent L slam. Continue reading Louisville Card File: Louisiana Lafayette

dunkcardThe visiting Golden Eagles tallied their 9th and 10th points last night on a Michael Craig layup with 8:48 to play in the first half, which cut the fast-starting Louisville Cardinal lead to 10-19.

The visiting Golden Eagles tallied their 14th and 15thh points on a Jerrold Brooks layup with 13:06 to play in the game, cutting the smothering homesteader’s lead to 15-45.

Here’s the math. Five points for coach Donnie Tyndall’s visiting Southern Miss five in 15:42.

They hit 28.9% from the field, 2/11 treys. They committed 22 turnovers. When they called a timeout 3:07 into the game to try to quell the Cardinal tide, U of L led 11-0 and the visitors had only taken one (1) shot.

They stepped inbounds on out of bounds plays. They stepped on the sideline. They threw it away often. They were intimidated — except for one monster slam — at the rim.

The word “flummoxed” comes to mind. Continue reading Louisville Card File: Southern Mississippi
