U of L CardFile: UVa

Here’s a ’24-’25 Louisville Cardinals trend.

Another game another player unavailable.

That Noah Waterman thumb thing.

Plus, the sphincter-tightening moment with 8:20 to play, when Terrence Edwards takes a bump, immediately hobbles off the court, and back to the hallway. Fortunately nothing significant . . . yet.

Here’s a trend.

Rough around the edges, but seriously tough Kader Trarore impacts the affair as soon as he moves from pine to hardwood.

KT’s first three defensive possessions. Blocked shot. U of L gets the rock. Strong rebound. Steal, going end to end for a slam. .

He’s far from what one might call a finesse player, but oh my..

Of course, the battle was won, but his +1 sandwiching the last media stoppage was sweet.

Then there’s that rebound he simply ripped out of Cavalier’s hand.

Here’s a trend.

Khani Rooths only FG was a triple from the corner, and gave the Cards significant breathing room with 6:39 to go at 65-50.

It was huge. A momentum changer. Happened before a few games back.

Here’s a trend.

Cards taking advantage of a Flagrant 1 upgrade. Resulting in Rooths’ other scores, a couple at the line.

Here’s a trend.

James Scott continuing to improve.

12 points. 10 boards.

Plus, something new. At least I don’t remember it happening before.

Scott drove the lane, with the ball, tallied and converted the +1. 80-62.

Here’s a trend.

And the lede.

Louisville Cardinals won their 8th in a row.

Cards 81, Virginia 67.

It wasn’t that close. UVa picked up some garbage late against J’Vonne and the Walk Ons.

Biggest crowd in the Yum! (announced) since . . . who can remember?

18,233

 * * * * *

Here’s one that’s not really a trend.

But a good sign.

23/27 at the charity stripe.

85%.

That’d be glossy.

 * * * * *

This one’s not a trend.

It’s a given. Since the beginning in the Bahamas.

U of L busting its hump after loose balls. Reyne Smith throwing himself on the floor for the orange. Edwards hurling himself out of bounds to swat the ball off a visitor for the possession.

Scott fisting away a UVa dribble from behind on a fast break, and Traore laying out past the endline trying to secure the ball.

 * * * * *

Frank Anselem-Ibe saw minutes for the depleted frontcourt in both halves.

Not sure I can remember that happening before.

 * * * * *

The win was solid.

Workmanlike.

Here was my haberdasherial conundrum for the day.

I never wear Card gear to games. Because, I say to self, I am comfortable enough with the depth of fealty that it isn’t necessary.

Nor do I ever wear anything black.

Which hearkens back to San Diego, when I wore a black polo shirt with a red bandana tied around my biceps. (It was the 70s, kids.) Card colors, ya know. Loss.

But, in recent times, I have taken to wearing my teams’ gear to workout on game day.

Cardinal gear when U of L is in action.

Lions Honolulu Blue when Detroit will play.

Lots of Tiger stuff daily during the MLB playoffs.

Today, there was the Card game. Then a Lions game.

What’s a fan boy to do?

Priorities, ya know.

Cardinal merch while working out. A Lions ballcap to protect me against the chilly foggish inclemency.

One Mission Accomplished. Another a few hours away.

Next: SMU. Away.

This one scares me.

The hardest loss I’ve ever endured — even more than that national semi fall referenced above — was to the Mustangs in the ’67 MW Regional.

  1. How bout this one ? – March 17,1978 NCAA
    DePaul 90 – Louisville 89 (2OT)

    Dave Corzine goes off for 46 ! Against a cards team of Bobby Turner – Griff – Larry Williams – Rickey Gallon – Rick Wilson – Tony Branch & Roger Burkman –

    We watched the game with our Crew @ El Slung’s & during game big SNOW fell as we attempted to slog back to the Highlands

    1. Rick Wilson hit a big shot to tie it at the end of regulation, missed one to win it at the end of the first OT, then hit one in the final minute of the second OT to put us up one before Corzine won it at the buzzer. That’s my personal number three most disheartening NCAA loss, number two is the U.S. Reed half court shot, number 1 will forever be the 75 National semi.

  2. Just more of the same. Ho-hum. Nothing but grit and the determination to win. “Easy eight, eight easy”.

  3. Here’s a first, probably not a trend – A Seedy K Card file without mention of Chucky.

    8 assists, 4 steals, controlling much of the game while shooting 2-13

    It doesn’t look like we’ll lose another in the ACC – but you are correct in that at SMU sounds like a scary trap game.

    1. We will lose another game in the ACC. Probably a couple. It’s not like the Cards have turned into Alcindor-era UCLA.

  4. SMU on the road w a wounded Waterman and after grueling games w the ‘Cuse make this a big trap game. Won’t press the nine.
