Not sure there’s anything that’ll get a charter member of the Cardinal Chapter of Hoopaholic’s Anonymous more fired up.
A presser on the 16th of July. Coach Pat Kelsey. J’Vonne Hadley. Aly Khalifa. Kobe Rodgers. Mikel Brown Jr.
So ratcheted up is my anticipation for tip off of the season — still literally months away — I couldn’t begin immediately to share my observations. Though I did give a heads up to fellow hoopaholic Smarts, who is out of town on babysitting duty.
As well as my ex- who had waffled until deadline whether to reup on her seats. “I have just come from a basketball press conference. And you are going to be very glad that you are getting your tickets for next season.”
I know, I know, I’m easy.
But there was something about the four very articulate players presence, their sense of confidence that I wasn’t prepared for.
The palpable connection and mutual admiration of Aly Khalifa and Mikel Brown Jr..
MBJ’s preternatural assurance in his game. Totally devoid of boastful swag.
Plus his hair, a pretty close but not quite full sorta Chucky doo.
AK’s physical appearance. He lost 50 lbs. at least I have to assume.
“I’m faster than I was at BYU,” he said to laughter.*
*Or something to that effect. I don’t record such meet and greets, and haven’t gone back to watch. I take written notes in cursive, the old fashion way. Most of these quotes are paraphrased. Some are word for word.
PK in the way he does said “He’s one of the five best passing big men in the world.”
Brown thought the only big he could compare passing wise for AK is Nikola Jokić.
Kobe Rodgers, he’s the injury redshirt who is nowhere on our radar . . . yet. Well, know this, he led his lower division school, Nova Southeaster, to an undefeated 36-0 campaign and national title. A “phenomenal leader” sayeth PK.
Knowing how to win, a good thing. He’s an X factor, given how the other four backcourt guys are getting the ink . . . so far.
J’Vonne Hadley is the glue. And was honest enough to share he considered moving elsewhere before re-upping in red and black.
The kid’s got a winning smile. Plus a dazzling set of teeth. Really.
Of Mikel, J’V offered, “I’ve never seen any player like him at that age.”
When talking about the trio of recent foreign arrivals, “with their next level energy,” Hadley offered what for me was the mic drop substantive observation of the whole affair. And said it so matter of factly.
“It’s going to be hard for teams to rebound against us.”
Two takeaways about depth.
It’s generally believed Mouhamad — Mo — Camara has the most development to do. Project is the descriptor we use in these situations. But when Rodgers was asked who had impressed him of the trio, he mentioned that Camara had made a couple of plays in an early practice that had him shaking his head. (Figuratively.)
Kasean Pryor has not been cleared for full practice. PK said the docs have told him Pryor is ahead of schedule.
Some incidentals:
Khani Rooths grew an inch.
Sananda Fru — stoic as some from Germany are wont to be — doesn’t get PK’s jokes.
Oh, c d, enough already.
It’s only the middle of July.
But October 24 and a visit from Rock Chalk Jayhawk is on my mind.

111 days until tip off.
But, hey, who’s counting?
