Almost Official, Sorta, Maybe, Probably: Bidunga Watch

I now dodder.

I get confused.

I’ve eaten with the same two guys every Wednesday for a couple decades now. We rotate who chooses where.

When Mr. B proclaimed the venue in our text feed yesterday, I immediately confused it with two other restaurants along Frankfort Avenue.

It happens more often than ever. Which is bracing.

This morning I awoke to a couple of headlines that Flory Bidunga has “signed” with U of L.

A Letter of Intent? His NIL deal? His scholarship papers? His request for admittance?

The reports further advise he has not officially withdrawn yet from the NBA draft.

So, tell me Mr. Wizard, what does it mean? Really mean?

In this day and age, it seems nothing is “official” until the player posts a mockup on Instagram of him looking fierce, wearing a Cardinal uni, and proclaiming “Committed!!!!!!”

This signing has seemed “inevitable” given the kid’s reports from the Combine, etc.

But still, an old pensioner has to ask, is it official “official?”

 * * * * *

The buzz on the Kansas transfer is his lack of offensive chops. And his height, of less than 6-8.

The reality is he’s going to make lots of moolah in The Ville while working on his jumper, and advancing toward his degree.

Here’s what I know about “undersized” pivot men.

With all due respect to Pervis Ellison, Fred Sawyer, Jerry DuPont and Gabe Wiznitzer, the three premier centers ever for the Cards were . . .

Wes Unseld. 6-6 3/4.

Charlie Tyra. 6-8.

Rodney McCray 6-8.

So, as we wait for the fully committed official commitment, the social media confirmation, a photo of Flory walking along Floyd Street, we do feel better today about this wait than we did yesterday.

And we’ll see if undersized Flory Bidunga measures up to those who’ve jumped center for the Cards in the past?

  1. Seedy, those players you mentioned played when players in general were not as tall. Even Rodney McCray. Sure there were 7 footers around, but they were more a rarity than today. Same with 6’11”, 6’10”, 6’9″, and so on. I’m not saying Bidunga can’t play the 5, but he will be going up against larger numbers of taller guys than Wes, Charlie, and even Rodney did.

But maybe he’s another Charles Jones. A giant slayer.

  2. We need him to rebound and defend…and maybe, maybe, score from three feet. But he’s signed. That’s kinda like an agreement?

    1. It is an agreement of some sort, but could easily have an out clause if he chooses to stay in the draft.

And like Seedy was saying, what did he even “sign”?

    2. Signed what? That’s what we don’t know. And he apparently hasn’t withdrawn from the draft.

  3. This story reminds me of Montrez…when he pulled out of the draft to work on his jumper. Often to the detriment of winning.
