Hoopaholic’s Gazette: Monday, Monday

And, so the long obsessional wait in the Land of the Dark & Bloody Ground continues.

As of 9:43 AM Monday June 1, addled fans with no other life of the Louisville Cardinals and Wildcats — Kentucky and Arizona — continue to hold their breath.

The Pride of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, three point marksman Milan Momcilovic has yet to reveal at which college he might be participating as a member of the basketball team next season.

It’s an odd one.

Reports surfaced on Saturday, most on UK fan sites, that MM had advised U of L and UK of his decision.

Could be true.

Very well might not be fact.

If so, how odd that he hasn’t yet instagrammed a photo of him in red or blue.

Negotiating details of his contract? Perhaps.

I dunno.

He’s going to be a wealthy young man, wherever he balls next campaign.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

As for a couple of dudes of foreign persuasion whom we know shall be Cards next season, hope continues to rise.

Hoops HQ listed the Top Ten new internationals in the ACC.

Obinna Edezie was #3.

Boyuan Zhang was #8.

The latest Way Too Early Top 25 I’ve seen, this one from ESPN, has the Cardinals slotted as the thirteenth best team in the land heading into next season.

Which season shall commence earlier than ever.

November 1.

Long gone are the days of yesteryore when there would be a Varsity vs. Freshman game Thanksgiving weekend, and the season would start first Saturday in December.

How quaint.

That’s when schools were limited to 26 regular season tilts.

That number now reads 32. Up one from a season ago.

Interesting article this morning about Roger Ayers, the ref whom Card fans see a lot because the ACC is his primary territory.

He’s regarded by those in the know, especially coaches, as one of the best in the biz. Even if come February, thanks to fatigue, there’s some slippage.

Last year, he called 114 games, 2d most in the land.

The most infamous of which was the Regional final about which much was made.

The Ayers/ Danny Hurley head bump and all.

Both continue to advise it was a nothingburger. A quick exchange about which social (and legit) media made way too much.

We don’t think of these folks we see on TV and from the stands outside of that context. But they have real lives.

As last season wound down, Ayers’ brother was on his death bed. And the ref needed to make a call on whether to pull the plug or not.

He passed soon after Roger Ayers made his last call of the season.

He’ll be back in stripes come November.

It is now 10:07 AM.

A hoopaholic’s anticipation grows.

  1. This whole thing is unreal. Milan Momcilovic wasn’t even all Big 10 honorable mention. He wasn’t even the best player on his team last season. He can’t play defense. He’s not a ball handler. He doesn’t rebound well (avg 3 rpg), he doesn’t distribute the ball (avg 1 apg). He cannot create his own shot. He is a phenomenal spot up shooter. That’s it. A totally one dementional player. Usually when a player is this hyped, and going to get this much money the saying is, “he does it all”. Milan Momcilovic does none of it, except for one thing he does exceptionally well. Spot up shoot.

Kentucky fans are beside themselves, and pulling their hair out. They can’t believe that with them having reportly the best offer that Milan hasn’t committed to them the minute he pulled out of the draft. It’s fun watching them lose their shit over arguably a mediocre player. A good player I guess, but not a great player. The level of desperation they have sunk to is a thing of beauty. They are realizing that even with the best offer, it’s questionable how many good players even want to play at Kentucky.

Even if he ends up going to Kentucky, it’s going to be fun teasing them about how much they paid a player of this caliber.

    This is fun.

    1. Kinda fun. I don’t think he’s quite as unimpressive as you make him out to be, but his forte is obviously shooting from distance.

      1. My point is all the hype and how much he is apparently going to get paid. It’s all way overblown. Those stats are his real stats. Not particularly impressive. His scoring average right at 17 ppg is solid. Not spectacular, but definitely solid. What’s spectacular is his three point shooting percentage. That’s it. Nothing else really moves the needle. He received no post season accolades. Nada.

    2. Aside from Iowa State being in the Big12 which would make honorable mention Big10 difficult, I agree that as a spot up shooter with limited defensive skills or ability to get in the paint and make passes for assists or play D I can’t imagine him being valued as high as any of the players we currently have in the fold so as far as his decision on where to be paid, IDGAS

  2. Here’s some perspective. Even at the “bargain” of $5 mill, that’s way more than Kelsey.

    1. Al McGuire would not coach in today’s college game. He dismissed NBA talk by saying it would never work because he would have to make $1 more than the highest paid player. Maybe Kelsey uses that tactic in his next renegotiation, assuming he earns another one.

    1. Wonder what his major will be at UK?

I know, it’s my repeated comment on these signings, but It’s the best I can do.
