Tax Day Titters: Drafts, Hoops, Pucks, Birdies & More (Music Video Included)

animated_sportsFor those of you who genuflect every a.m. before a giclée of Mel Kiper Jr., those of you who vitalis your hair into a coiffure that emulates the self-styled NFL draft “expert,” there’s now a movie about all you obsess over.

“Draft Day” stars Kevin Costner as the GM of the Cleveland Browns, who has choices to make on, you know, draft day. You can listen to my review here.

Now onto some real sports considerations.

Looks like things is gonna be just the same as they ever was next season in women’s college hoops. Continue reading Tax Day Titters: Drafts, Hoops, Pucks, Birdies & More (Music Video Included)

Monday Morning Musings

bballGiven that I possess the attention span of a house fly (musca domestica) flitting about a porch bulb in August, I love the McNuggets of McNews that now come in my morning paper.

So, I pass along with my favorite from this a.m.

In January ’55, Minnesota topped Purdue in the longest Big Ten game ever. Six OTs. Final tally: Golden Gophers 59, Boilermakers 56. 115 points total in 70 minutes of action. Musta been scintillating. No Sominex™ necessary.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

Led by Asia Taylor, the U of L women’s basketball team looked solid yesterday, besting a legit Top 25 Rutgers squad.

Despite those two championship appearances, this looks to my undiscerning eyes like Jeff Walz’s best squad.

But, until he can recruit some big uns, the Cardinals shall remain wannabes as legit title contenders.

Two things remain elusive, uncertain as we wend our way to those magical days ahead, known as Championship Week and March Madness.

1. The whereabouts of Viktor Yanukovych?

2. The NCAA tournament favorite? Continue reading Monday Morning Musings

Thirteen Thoughts for Thursday (Rockin’ Video Included)

animated_sports1. Boys Will Be Boys. So The Rick, as he is wont to do from time to time, pontificated about his feelings on the social media phenomenon.

Essentially, he called all of us who might, from time to time, tweet or post on Facebook or any other of our ilk, uh, “crazy.”

Which is, frankly, a really stupid thing to say, but of little consequence in the realm of human events.

Except to Coach Cal, he of the you-say-potato-I-say-tomato mentality, when it comes to his rival down I-64.

And so it goes.

Boys, go to your rooms, each of you, and don’t come out until called for dinner. Continue reading Thirteen Thoughts for Thursday (Rockin’ Video Included)

Monday’s Musings: Olympic Downer, Downhill & Down for the Count

animated_sportsBecause I knew that Bode Miller hadn’t medaled, and figured I had seen enough Snowboard SlopeStyle, I decided to concentrate on the Beatles TV special last night, instead of Sochi.

So, at this juncture, I want to give a shout out to the lamoid rock outfit known as Imagine Dragons, which pretenders some how got the gig to sing “Revolution” on the CBS special.

So soulless, so God awful, were they, I flipped over in time to watch some of that downhill. For that I give thanks to Imagine Dragons, whom I hope never to encounter again, unless I happen to take a cruise in the future to Middle Earth, neither of which I’ll ever do.

We in Kentucky Derbyland are prone to refer to our signature sporting event as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”

I beg to differ. Continue reading Monday’s Musings: Olympic Downer, Downhill & Down for the Count

Thursday’s Sporting This & That

reporterI’ll be honest about it.

I’ve never really paid attention to the academic standing of “student athletes.” The vast majority of college jocks are simply mercenaries, enrolled in one institution of higher learning or another for the sole purpose of continuing to participate competitively in the sports they love.

If they take advantage of the academic opportunity, good for them. If they coast, usually with the complicity of athletic departments and the presence of an easily maneuvered curriculum, so be it.

Big time college sports haven’t a thing to do education in the normal sense, nor are they your classic extracurricular activity.

That said, I pass along the news that, in the fall semester, the U of L men’s basketball team posted an average GPR of 3.47, the highest in the school’s history.

Which, all my indifference aside, is pretty damn cool. Continue reading Thursday’s Sporting This & That

Tuesday Tidbits From The World O’ Sports

reporterIs there a more satisfying way to end the regular NFL season, than to watch — for what, the 3d year in a row? — Jerry Jones, expletives deleted, stomping out of his sky box at the JerryDome, his ‘Boys yet again a loser and out of the playoffs?

Always brings a smile to my face.

* * * * *

It was an exciting way to end the 17 week, 16 game slog, leading to the playoffs.

Chip Kelly’s Philly securing the W late in Big D, Little a, Double ll, as, to make the playoffs.

That fourth down Rogers to Cobb miracle on the frozen tundra of Soldier’s Field, as the Pack ousted Da Bears in pro football’s oldest and most fabled rivalry.

KC’s Ryan Succup missing a chip shot FG that would have launched the Steelers into the post season. Adding to the intrigue is the major officiating miscue that should have given him another shot from five yards closer.

The rise of Carolina, which started the season 1-3, and finished it 11-1.

I love the college hoops announcing experiment being attempted at The World Wide Leader. Continue reading Tuesday Tidbits From The World O’ Sports

Hump Day Harrumphs: Blonde Hair, Empty Seats +++

shoutingRarely have so many Unnamed Sources been so united with their innuendo.

Mack Brown will step down as coach of the Texas Longhorns by the end of the week.

Or, so they say. Yeah, I know, hold your yawns.

But, here to pontificate on the sports “news” of the day, so I reflect that I’m not sure what Nick Saban’s doing right nowy? Probably breaking down film of Boomer Sooner, I suspect.

But I do know what Bobby Petrino is doing. Sitting by the phone, praying it rings, that’s what.

But, it’s Nick’s call. Will he go? Will he stay?

I’m sure that you, as I, have scooted to the edge of your seat in eager, apprehensive anticipation. Continue reading Hump Day Harrumphs: Blonde Hair, Empty Seats +++

Pigskin Roundup: Sparty, Strong, SnowBall, Stanford Etc.

footballoldMy inclination is, of course, such is my nature, to start with a personal lament.

But, that must wait. At least for a paragraph.

For it would be inhumane not to dutifully express heartfelt sadness that it shall be weeks before all the scarlet and gray-clad remains are dredged from the depths of the Olentangy River. Which body of water runs through the campus of The Ohio State University, where flags are flying half staff.

There are murmurs that classes for the rest of the school year might be suspended. No word yet from school officials. Though I’m advised dorms are already emptying out.

My favorite barb about the Buckeyes’ demise came from the pen of Eric Crawford. Under a photo of a forlorn Urban Meyer, eating a slice of Papa J’s while sitting on a golf cart at Lucas Oil in the aftermath of his first L at The Ohio State U., Crawford wrote: Bitter ingredients. Bitter Pizza.

Clever. Continue reading Pigskin Roundup: Sparty, Strong, SnowBall, Stanford Etc.
